Does Anyone Remember High School?

I was on Facebook last night just seeing what was up. I don’t comment much on there but I still like to see what everyone else is up to. So I’m minding my own business, yes I was, and noticed a site called, I grew up in and the name of the town I graduated in.

Let’s just say that I was not a popular girl. I did not grow up in this town and only spent the last two years of high school there. Needless to say, I was not welcomed too well. But I’m off subject here.

What I found absolutely hilarious is reading what other people remember. I’ve read all about the places but not much about the events. I remember specific events but not specific places. I guess I’m just getting old. It’s either that or I just didn’t care much.

They were still talking about the antiquated gala called May Fete. It’s kind of like having a homecoming queen but this is only for the girls. There is no king. It started about 100 years before I went to school there. And for those of you who know my true age, it means like forever ago. I’ve been out of high school for 31 years now. That means the ritual was really old.

The gist of it is this. It has to do with fertility. Yes! The age-old question of what a girl is to do when she graduates high school. I graduated in 1980 not 1880! What were they thinking by continuing this ancient ritual that degrades females by telling them they are only good for one thing?!!?

I wonder if they still have that ridiculous evening. I will have to ask someone.

And for those of you who are so curious, this was my May Fete photo. OMG!!!

Business Law and Those Who Are Hilarious

I have a fellow student in my Business Law class who needs to take a breath. We are three weeks into class and this girl has completely lost it. Here is the gist of this week’s discussion so far. The topic is…..

Courts have ruled that file-sharing, such as Napster for music, does not fall within the fair use. What do you think? Should fair use apply? Why or why not?

My post:

Unfortunately, I can see both sides of the fair use argument. Most DVD’s and CD’s say they cannot be resold. If no one is reselling the music and only sharing the music, then I do not see how it cannot fall under the fair use statute. I am more likely to lean this way than the other. However, if the company providing the platform for the file sharing is making a profit, I can see how that would not fall into the fair use category.

Her response:

Christina,
According to Miller:
In determining whether the use made of a work in any particular case is a fair use the factors to be considered shall include: the purpose and character of the use, including whether such use is of a commercial nature or is for nonprofit educational purposes; the nature of the copyrighted work; the amount and substantiality of the portion used in relation to the copyrighted work as a whole; and the effect of the use upon the potential market for or value of the copyrighted work (Miller, 2011, p. 140).
Sharing music with your son is not a violation since he is in your care. He is part of your immediate family and people buy stuff for their immediate family all the time. I am assuming that your son of course is under 18 and still lives with you.
You pay for Directv and DVR services. You cannot copy them with any updated technology. Since you cannot copy them you cannot give them to other people for free use. You had to pay for the material!
If you buy music to put onto your computer and download the bought music to your son’s IPod that is completely legal. If you download music that you bought that is completely legal. If you download music that you did not buy that is a violation of copyrighted material. People earn a living by making these songs that you love to listen to. If we don’t pay for music and movies then people will stop making them.

My response to her:

I understand what you are saying, but I know a couple of things that are not going to stop. People will continue to make music and they will continue to make movies. The reason is that no matter what happen, there will be people who want to make music and movies. They still made a lot of money even when sites like Napster were up and running.
We, as humans, will always want to go to the movies and we will always buy the music we love because radio is just not enough. We, as humans will also need new music and movies.
If we look at the fair use ideal, then why are we allowed to sells used books? Those are also copyrighted works. We can pass them around to our friends without legal repercussions. And no one seems to have a problem with them being sold online through Amazon or Ebay. How do you feel about that? Many of us purchase used textbooks. How does that infringe upon copyrights and reselling issues?

People who are so righteous about their position really annoy me. Then I laugh. I always thought life was more gray than black and white.

I Have a Weakness

Now don’t let yourself go to the gutter. Shame on you! I’m talking about books. Not porn or erotic thrillers. Again, get your mind out of the gutters! I’m talking the best writers of our time. You know, Stephen King, Dean Koontz, James Rollins, and Clive Cussler. Yes, action, adventure, and the paranormal. Well, sort of paranormal. But “Odd Thomas” was great book.

Anyway, back to my original thought. You really shouldn’t distract me. And, yes, you did. I had to clarify for you which means distraction. See it’s happening again. Let me start again.

I have been a Stephen King fan since shortly after high school. His book, “The Stand” is in my top five of all time. If you haven’t read it, you should. For those of you who are unable to handle foul language don’t bother. What you will miss though is the ultimate tale of good versus evil. It even brings God and Satan into the fray. Trust me when I say it is one fantastic ride.

As for Dean Koontz……who can beat Odd Thomas as a great character? He has been so well received that Koontz has written three more books about him. That’s quite a feat considering he has NEVER brought a character back until Odd. Definitely worth a look.

James Rollins plays right into the whole what is possible regarding nature and things that we still have to discover. He also plays into the damage man can do when trying to play God. He keeps my attention from the very first page.

Now we come to Clive Cussler. What a rush it is to read his books. I absolutely will scrimp and save to get his books as soon as they come out. I just can’t wait. And I’m behind in my reading because of the job situation for the last six months. But I still have to buy the books. I’m going to read them, really I will.

Now don't think I've forgotten the classics. "To Kill a Mockingbird" and "Jane Eyre" are some of the greatest stories ever told. We're just talking about my weakness. Get with the program!

Now that I’ve told you my little secret I guess you think you know me. I hate to tell you this but I have a few other secrets too. I might reveal them and then again, I might not. You don’t have to know everything.

I Figured It Out

I have long been told by my mother that I am anti-social. Well at the grand old age of “almost 49”, I figured out she is wrong. Yes, you heard me. My mother has been wrong all my life.

One of my favorite things to do is take photos. I live for it. For the last several months, I have not had the time to do much of it and found myself taking the same old photos all the time. Since I’m unemployed right now my photo taking has been increasing in frequency. Isn’t that just great? I thought so.

So today I decided to take a drive through one of the parks I haven’t been to for some time. And what do you think I discovered? THERE ARE TOO MANY PEOPLE HERE!!!

I want to get in a 4WD and putz through a place where I DON’T HAVE A CAR ON MY BUMPER!!! If you putz through a park like I do, you will have at least 3 or 4 cars on your bumper. I’m looking for a possible photo op and because there are so many people here and no other place to go, they are all SITTING ON MY BUMPER!!!

I like places that are sparsely populated. It really has nothing to do with being anti-social. I gladly spend time with, hang out with, and socialize with people who like the same things I do. The problem is that people who live here don’t like the same things.

They get caught up in the whole big town social atmosphere and forget there is another world out there. What I love about the off road experience is not the “solitude”. We used to take these drives with all the kids and with other people. We might have 2 or 3 vehicles at the same time. So it isn’t the need to be alone, it’s the need to be out somewhere with only a few. At least be a group that likes to do the same thing.

I don’t drink. The people my husband hangs around with do. Subsequently he does too. I have no desire to sit around in a garage or with a gazillion other people so I can partake of alcoholic beverages. It isn’t my thing. They talk about other people and things I have no interest in. But it’s all I see around me.

Right now I have no choices and that may be why it bothers me so much. I’m working on the situation but it will take time. In the meantime, I know I’m not anti-social. I just don’t like the same things that people around here do.

The view behind me.....

And the view in front of me.....

LIKE I SAID!!! TOO MANY PEOPLE!!!

Not Feeling It

I cannot get into school stuff right now. The brain is not functioning enough to write. I don’t know if it’s overload of everything that’s been going on or if it’s because I don’t have anything going on. Take your pick cause I don’t know.

The worst part of the writer’s block is that it’s Business Law and Strategic Management. I love this kind of stuff! Now I can’t write about it. Some might say I just don’t have the brains for it. Others might say I just need to suck it up. I’m thinking the latter.

So what’s a girl to do? Is she supposed to just keep plugging away even through the lack of ideas? Is she supposed to give in and ask for a recess? I think not. I’ll just keep pushing through. After all, I did last week and managed an almost perfect score. Maybe I just need to do it that way!

Kidnapping

If someone stands in front of a door preventing you from leaving the premises, is that considered kidnapping? Just asking.

Fawk You Friday

BWS tips button

I'm hoping to get more posts put in now that I am unemployed. Other than cleaning house and school, there isn't much else.

For those of you who are worried about the button, J, at Boobies, Babies, & A Blog, and I, are just fine with using one of ours, or not. It's your choice. I don't know how else to tell everyone we do not have a problem with that. We just want people to join and vent. Just have some fun!!! How hard is that? Here is my list. And, yes, I know I'm late. Get over it!

Fawk You to people who wish to cause trouble. REALIZE LIFE IS NOT ALL ABOUT YOU!!!

Fawk You to the weather. YOU CAN LIGHTEN UP ANY TIME NOW!!!

Fawk You to unemployment. GET IN AS MUCH OF A HURRY AS I AM!!!

Fawk You to cancer. COMMIT GENOCIDE AND WIPE YOURSELF OUT!!!

Now what do you have to say! I dare you!

My Relief Was Short-Lived

Yes, I did not receive my unemployment for this week. And the only reason I have is that it is under review. So for two weeks it was supposed to be okay. Not now.

Now I don’t know when the unemployment will go through. I finally reached someone in that office but all they could tell me was that it was under review. What? I was told originally that I was eligible and now I have to wait for a new assessment? What is that all about?

Okay, now that I have ranted about that, I can continue. So here it goes.

My brother and his family are coming!!! The exclamation points are for him and his kids. My SIL is more of a so what reaction. She has to be able to sleep or she’s cranky. She has to go shopping or she’s cranky. She has to do things her way or she’s cranky. Do you see where I’m going with this? So I will have to take a deep breath right before she gets here and sail through the weekend. Hopefully, it will go smoothly. After all, who doesn’t want smooth sailing?

Tuesday Train

I'm thinking the heat can go away now. We've had heat indexes over 110 degrees for several days now and will not go away until at least Thursday. It isn't fun I can tell you. I can say I did not have any fun getting milk and bread today. Keep your fingers crossed it goes away soon.

Now it's time to take a ride on the Train and I'm really happy I'm here. Aren't you glad to join us on the ride? With Faith, Family, And Friends, The Survival Mama, and The House on the Corner are the best at what they do. So link up and enjoy the ride.

So Much for a Normal Life

Some of you want to know what normal is. It’s a place where most people get along. Let me explain.

I grew up in a family where we had our arguments but we always knew who we could count on. That was each other. I have always known that I could call one of them and they would be here in a heartbeat. No questions asked either.

I have a couple of sister-in-laws that do not think in any way like the rest of us. One can be very controlling. She wants her way and that is all there is to it. But she does not outwardly cause friction and tension with the rest of the family. She plays nice for the most part. There are no nasty words exchanged.

That is not what happens around my house though. Life is not very smooth or easy. It seems like every time it may go fairly easily, someone comes along and causes more strife. And I don’t get it.

Why do some people love drama? I don’t know. What happened to being calm and why does someone want to inflict it upon others?

Is Anyone Else Addicted?

Why not? It’s fascinating! Okay, so I know not everyone either can or wants to watch Courtv like me. I am so addicted. There is one caveat though. I don’t stay glued to it. But the tv is on and I half listen. I get the major points.

I know that everyone else in the world has been following the Casey Anthony trial. It’s made the news all the way around the world. For those of you who were completely outraged by the verdict, I understand. Here’s my take on how the jury reached its decision and why I feel they reached the logical conclusion. And before I get all this hate mail keep in mind I agree that she had something to do with Caylee’s death.

So the question is why do I feel they reached the correct verdict? I feel this way because there is no evidence to say how little Caylee died. You have to ask yourself only one question.

What exactly is the cause of death?

And you can’t answer it. Neither can I. My problem is that although I feel she did something, there is no way to say what the exact cause of death was. For that reason, you cannot find for First Degree. Now can you find for Manslaughter? That answer is also no.

How many of you have heard or read stories about teenagers or pre-teens who died from an undiagnosed heart condition? Until they died, those kids led regular lives with bicycles and soccer. It was not until the autopsy was performed that it was discovered. So did Caylee have an undiagnosed heart condition? We don’t know. That is the problem.

The prosecution went after the wrong verdict. First Degree was not what they should have gone for. Had they charged her with Manslaughter and unlawful disposal of a body, they may have been able to pin something besides lying to law enforcement on her.

The smell test is not scientific fact and the odor science is still in its infancy. That puts those theories at a disadvantage from the start. Those were the only real pieces of evidence they put forth. Liars do not make murderers any more than do cheating spouses. So that cannot be taken into account either. It was going to be a tough sell for the prosecution.

The most disturbing things I have found since that verdict was rendered are the threats that are being thrown at Casey’s parents and the attorneys.

First of all, why is anyone threatening her parents? They did not do anything with Caylee, nor did they have anything to do with the verdict. Leave them alone! And the attorneys were doing the job they were hired to do. Leave them alone!

But the worst thing I’ve heard is in regards to the Oklahoma woman who was run off the road causing her truck to flip twice before stopping. The other woman claimed she looked like Casey and had to be stopped. Granted she is crazy, but there are more crazy people out there just like her. Who else will continue to be violent in defense of Caylee?

Hasn’t there been enough violence coming out of this case? The more attention paid to her will only ensure that this case lingers on and on. So this will be my last post on Casey Anthony or anything regarding the case. Unless, of course, something else ticks me off. So be prepared for that too.

Updates

Not much is going on with me these days. I have more rejections than anything else, but that’s what seems to be going on for most people out there. The job market is just bad. Let’s face it…it isn’t getting any better any time soon. At least the unemployment people aren’t holding anything against me. I found out they are going to let me draw.

You see, I was afraid they may not. I worked for a call center about two years ago for only a short amount of time. Then I was out of work for almost a year. At that time the only company who was willing to hire me was another call center. This one has sales quotas that I was unable to meet. Of course, it has something to do with me being too honest, but whatever. I really was afraid I would not be able to draw because of it. Today they said I could. Yea me!

So I find myself a little at loose ends now. I went from mandatory overtime with full time school requirements to nothing for about three weeks. Of course the break was welcome, but it’s more than I’m used to. I need more to do with my time. I guess the busier I am the better. Of course, my writing suffers and you all know how my posts have pretty much tapered off since then.

Since I can breathe now because the unemployment is coming in, I hope to change the lack of posts a bit. My hobby will also pick up some steam. I will probably have fun with that. Picture taking here I come!

The classes I have right now are almost hilarious. I have Business Law I and Strategic Management. Both of them will let me pontificate on my opinions about each one of them. And we all know how much I love that. I know you are aware of how much my opinion matters to me. I mean why not? Isn’t it important to you too? I thought so!

Aren’t you all glad I wrote this now? The sarcasm may be returning in small waves. Oh no!

Now what do you have to say! I dare you!

From a Small Town

I came from a small town in Illinois that has a really odd history. I didn’t grow up in this specific town but from an even smaller town in the same county. I moved there during my sophomore year in high school. Because of the cliques that reign supreme there, I was not part of the “in” crowd. Of course, I’m glad I don’t live there anymore in addition to the fact that I am not part of the crowd.

You see, this town is not on an interstate and is about three and a half hours straight south of Chicago. It is not a drive that someone just undertakes in a day. This town is also the largest town in the county but is still under 10,000 people. It has stayed, more or less, the same population since I can remember. The nickname of this town, however, is “Little Chicago”. Here’s a list of why.

It is the home of a really nasty motorcycle gang. There are unsolved murders and disappearances. One of the members of the Sicilian Mafia lives there and was part of an FBI case called the “Pizza Connection”. It has been the home of many drug operations and stings by both FBI and state police. And, lastly, the major shareholder in one of the oldest banks in town is suspected in both drugs and a couple of the murders.

During the ‘70s and ‘80s, the motorcycle gang was the feared group that you did not want to run afoul of. They meted out their own justice for any perceived wrongs. At least three of them are in prison for murders of local residents. They have been and still are ruthless. And they are still suspected of running drugs for the Mafia. In addition, they are suspected in the disappearance of two men who were also involved in drugs. Two of their members were tried and acquitted for their murders. Of course, the trial took place in this town.

The local pizza store owner was part of a major FBI case called the “Pizza Connection”. He was the nephew of the major player of the case, Don Tano Badalamenti from Palermo, Sicily. The Don died in prison. This case also involved drugs.

During the “90s I couldn’t even begin to count how many meth production operations there had been. There were so many that the DEA, the state police, and the FBI were all spent an inordinate amount of time on the investigations. Some of these people I knew in high school.

There is also the case of the “Newlywed Murders” that happened in 1986. For me, it is the most personal. I was only a year younger than the woman killed in this case and, at first, we knew there was a killer out there. I knew these two victims. The girl worked for the banker in question at his dog food plant.

We didn’t know if there was more than one for some time. To this day, the prosecutors say it was two men, but the investigation shows it COULD have been only one. In the meantime, two men I knew were arrested and convicted of the crime. One went to Death Row and the other life in prison. Those of us who knew them did not believe any of it. And today, they are both out of prison because of the issues regarding this case.

The latest news out of there involves Casey Anthony, of all people. That case has been and still is a world-wide sensation. At the time I write this, the news states she will only spend six more days in jail being released on July 13. So here’s the news on that.

Vivid Entertainment is the leading porn producer in the country. They have offered her a starring role in a porn film when she gets out of jail. How, do you ask, is this related to the small Illinois town I came from? Well let me tell you.

The co-owner and co-chairman of Vivid Entertainment was a classmate of mine that I graduated with in the small town I have been talking about. Forgive me this but, LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL!!!!!!! I cannot stop laughing about that particular tidbit.

I just hope that at some point the authorities will really look into and clean up this town. Somehow I doubt it, but I can always hope.
