Tolerance Is A Dirty Word

Yes, you read correctly. Tolerance means that a person can deal with something long enough to not cause a fuss about it. It does not mean that said person is okay with what is around them. It means they are not truly accepting of that person or persons. That is why I have a problem with the word.

Now when someone uses the word, acceptance, I think what a beautiful word it is. It doesn’t mean to tolerate, it means to truly accept who a person is. How wonderful that would be. I’m often reminded of John Lennon’s song, “Imagine”. This is my favorite part.

“You may say that I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will live as one”

I want my grandkids to live in a world where we accept those different from ourselves. We have to start somewhere. I say let’s start now.
